Working Groups

Working Groups (WGs) may be formed around a particular work item and exist only as long as it takes to complete the task(s).

A WG is usually small in size and consists of volunteers willing to dedicate themselves to one particular task. They are formed as a result of recommendations from the SIGs.

WGs report their work back to the SIG for deliberation.

EC Review of APNIC Voting Working Group

December 2011

The APNIC Executive Council has reviewed the Membership Voting Rights Working Group Report provided by the Chairs of the Voting WG to the APNIC membership at APNIC 32. The EC has also noted the comments received in response to the subsequent call for comments.

The EC notes that there is no clear consensus from the WG in support of proposing any changes to the existing membership voting tiers, nor have the chairs noted any visible prospects for achieving consensus in their requests for a further extension to the charter of this working group.

This is an important topic for APNIC, and the EC is mindful of the need for clear consensus of support for any proposal for change to the voting structure of APNIC. It is evident that this Working Group approach has been instrumental in bringing out a number of options for potential changes in the voting structure for APNIC. The next step in the process is one of evaluation of whether any of these proposals is likely to enjoy the broad support of APNIC’s members, and this step is one that is understandably a process that may benefit from a somewhat different approach.

The EC has now suspended the charter of the Working Group, and will take the topic of interest in membership structure and voting to the forthcoming 2012 APNIC Membership and Stakeholder survey. Through this survey the EC would like to collect inputs from members and stakeholders as to their interest in this activity, solicit comments on members’ perspectives on WG’s activities to date and seek their perspective on further actions and initiatives that would guide any followup actions with the prospect of re-chartering this Working Group.

The EC would like to thank the members of the WG for their interest and contributions to this important activity for APNIC, and invites all members and stakeholders to provide further commentary and input to this process via the 2012 APNIC Membership and Stakeholder Survey.

EC Review of APNIC Government Engagement Working Group

December 2011

The APNIC Executive Council has reviewed the final report of the Government Engagement Working Group, as presented by the Chairs of the WG to the APNIC membership at APNIC 32. The EC notes the recommendation for the establishment of a Public Policy Advisory Committee. The EC wishes to thank the chairs and the members of this WG for their efforts.

As the next step, the EC would now like to understand to what extent this proposal enjoys the support from those public entities that would form the core of such a committee. The EC now invites formal expressions of interest from governmental stakeholders in participating in this proposed body. Such expressions of interest should be directed in to the APNIC Director-General. The EC stands ready to host an inaugural meeting of a proposed Public Policy Advisory Committee, once there is a broad level of support across the economies in the APNIC region, as demonstrated through these expressions of interest.

The EC would like to thank the members of the WG for their interest and contributions to this Working Group.
