What is IPv4 Exhaustion Stage 3?
APNIC's IPv4 Exhaustion Stage 3 starts when APNIC reaches its last /8 of available IPv4 address space. The APNIC community has prepared policy amendments that change how APNIC distributes space from this point on.
How does the policy change in Stage 3?
Under the Final /8 policy, all new and existing APNIC Members who meet the current criteria may receive a minimum of a /24 up to a maximum total of /22 (1,024) IPv4 addresses.
How would this affect me?
If you represent an organization that operates in the Asia Pacific region, or you intend to deploy networks in the Asia Pacific and need IPv4 addresses, you need to be aware that the amount of address space APNIC can allocate to you in Stage 3 is limited to a maximum of a /22 (1,024 addresses).
What's the reasoning behind this policy change?
The APNIC community wants to ensure that new and existing LIRs can receive a minimum amount of IPv4 addresses to assist with their transitions to IPv6. This policy allows from around 16,000 to 65,000 independent networks to benefit from the Final /8 pool, which should last for many years into the future.
Who is eligible to receive space from the Final /8?
Existing or new APNIC account holders that meet any of the following criteria as stated in the IPv4 delegation criteria.
In Stage 2, APNIC Hostmaster response time for IPv4 requests was fixed at five (5) business days. Will this change in Stage 3?
Yes. In Stage 3, the response time will be reduced back to a maximum of two (2) business days, in line with every other service request response time.
I need IPv4 address space and would like to receive space under the Final /8 policy. How do I do that?
If you are already an APNIC account holder, you can use MyAPNIC to lodge your IPv4 request.
If you are not an APNIC account holder, you will need to open an account to apply for IPv4 addresses.
