APNIC and the ITU support IP-based infrastructure development in the AP

APNIC and the ITU will conduct a two-year capacity building project, "Support for IP-based Infrastructure development in Asia Pacific", designed to foster the implementation of IPv6 and assist in the further deployment of IP-based networks in the Asia Pacific region.

Beginning in 2014, APNIC in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will conduct a two-year capacity building project designed to foster the implementation of IPv6 and assist in the further deployment of IP networks in the Asia Pacific region.

The project was announced at the Connect Asia Pacific Summit staged at the IMPACT Exhibition and Conference Centre, Bangkok, Thailand on 18 November 2013. The project builds on the collaborative relationship between APNIC and the ITU Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence to work on IPv6 migration and security capacity building in the Asia Pacific that has developed during the past three years.

This latest project aims to provide assistance to policy makers, regulators, and Internet service providers (Fixed, Mobile, Internet, Applications, Content etc.) in the Asia Pacific region in at least the following areas of Internet network development: the transition from IPv4 to IPv6, technical measures to improve network stability and security, and the support of the establishment of Internet Exchange Points.

Adam Gosling, APNIC's Senior Policy Specialist said, "The effective development of Internet networks is a key objective for all ICT stakeholders in the Asia Pacific region. Supporting the rapid, sustainable growth of networks, ensuring these networks are robust and scalable, and providing an environment that encourages efficient interconnection - it is a vision we all share."

Recognizing the need for transition from IPv4 to IPv6 in the Asia Pacific region, APNIC and the ITU have been cooperating to build skills through workshops in the region since 2011. To this extent, the two organizations would continue this collaboration by mobilizing internal and external resources.
