Whois User Manual

Most users will benefit from the Quick beginners guide to using the APNIC Whois Database.

More advanced users may wish to obtain detailed guidelines on how to search the APNIC Whois Database.

You can download the Whois Manual (icon-pdf 2.97MB), which includes notes on all mandatory and optional attributes.

Test Whois Database

APNIC also operates a test database where users may learn how to use the APNIC Whois Database.

The test database is for training and learning only. The sample data in the test database is not a copy of the data in the APNIC Whois Database and changes to the test database are not reflected in the APNIC Whois Database. The APNIC Test Whois Database is not an authoritative source of whois data and no value should be put on the data in the test database.

  • For instructions on using the APNIC Test database, please refer to the Whois Manual (icon-pdf, 2.97MB).

Different types

There are two types of Whois databases available.  A Whois database will either contain records on IP address registrations or Domain name registrations.

The APNIC Whois Database contains records of IP address registrations.  Please use the APNIC Whois Database to search for details on IP addresses only.

  • See the IANA website for details on how to search on a domain name
