2009

  • 25 - 28 August: APNIC 28 held in Beijing, China
  • 1 July: APNIC will assign four-byte Autonomous System (AS) numbers by default when receiving requests (Two-byte AS numbers will only be assigned if the applicant can demonstrate that a four-byte only AS number is suitable)
  • March: New website launched
  • 23 - 27 February: APNIC 27 held in Manila, Philippines
  • 19 January: APNIC and the European registry RIPE NCC announced running RPKI prototypes in its efforts to secure the Internet's routing system

2008

  • 25 - 29 August: APNIC 26 held in Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 25 - 29 February: APNIC 25 held in Taipei, Taiwan in conjunction with APRICOT 2008
  • IPv6 connectivity showcases at its Open Policy Meetings
  • APNIC launches IPv6 modules on APNIC's eLearning platform
  • APNIC joins the 6DEPLOY project, part of the European Union's 7th Framework Program, as a sponsoring partner

2007

  • October 2007: As part of the critical public Internet infrastructure, APNIC deploys Nominun Authoritative Name Server to meet rigorous security and stability requirements in the Asia Pacific region
  • 29 August - 7 September: APNIC 24 held in New Delhi, India
    Resolution (110.1 kb) from APNIC 24
  • 26 February - 2 March: APNIC 23 held in Bali, Indonesia in conjunction with APRICOT 2007
  • APNIC community resolves to actively promote the adoption of IPv6 and focus efforts on the comprehensive deployment of IPv6 in the Asia Pacific Region
  • APNIC now supports over 20 root-server deployments
  • APNIC reached 1500 members

2006

  • 4 - 8 September: APNIC 22 held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
  • 3 February - 3 March: APNIC 21 held in Perth, Australia in conjunction with APRICOT 2006
  • APNIC launches 4-byte AS numbers
  • APSTER 20 released

2005

  • 16 - 18 November: APNIC participates as part of the NRO in the WSIS Exhibition held in Kram PalExpo as part of the Internet Pavilion.  The Internet Pavilion brought together a number of the key organizations responsible for both day-to-day management and policy development in the Internet sphere.
  • 6 - 9 September: APNIC 20 held in Hanoi, Vietnam
  • 21 - 25 February: APNIC 19 held in Kyoto, Japan, in conjunction with APRICOT 2005
  • APNIC membership reaches 1000 members
  • Live webchat deployed for APNIC helpdesk

2004

  • August: PacNOG was established as a mailing list for ISP operations engineers in the Pacific region following on from APNIC 18
  • 31 August - 3 September: APNIC 18 held in Nadi, Fiji
  • 30 July: APNIC worked on plans to install several more instances of I- and K-roots in various locations in the region
  • 23 - 27 February: APNIC 17 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in conjunction with APRICOT 2004
  • New ASO MoU between ICANN and the NRO creates the NRO NC
  • AfriNIC established and signs ASO MoU in 2005
  • Training services are expanded to over 25 economies
  • APNIC participates in United Nations WSIS process
  • Receives 'Consultative Status' recognition by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

2003

  • 14 November: APNIC announced the deployment of 2 new Internet root nameservers in the Asia Pacific region. The servers, mirrors of the F-root, will be installed in Taipei and Singapore, bringing to 5 the total number of new root nameservers in the Asia Pacific region
  • 3 November: ISC installed a new F-root server anycast instance in Beijing in cooperation with APNIC, China Telecom and the Beijing Internet Exchange to mirror the F-root nameserver managed by ISC in the United states
  • 24 October: RIR Boards further revised the proposed NRO MoU and signed during the ARIN members meeting in Chicago, USA in order to undertake joint activities, including joint technical projects, liaison activities and policy coordination
  • 22 September: ISC and APNIC announce deployment of a new F-root server in Seoul.
  • 19 - 22 August: APNIC 16 held in Seoul, Korea
  • 24 - 28 February: APNIC 15 held in Taipei, Taiwan, in conjunction with APRICOT 2003
  • Four existing RIRs form the Number Resource Organization (NRO)
  • APNIC website available via IPv6
  • APNIC joins the Number Resource Organization (NRO) to protect the unallocated Internet number resource pool

2002

  • November: ISC (Internet Software Consortium) and APNIC announce an agreement to dramatically improve the strength and integrity of the Internet infrastructure worldwide
  • 3 - 6 September: APNIC 14 held in Kitakyushu, Japan
  • 3 - 7 March: APNIC 13 held in Bangkok, Thailand, in conjunction with APRICOT 2002
  • APNIC Helpdesk launched
  • APNIC adds IPv6 to the apnic.net nameserver
  • APNIC begins a project to establish root server mirrors in the Asia Pacific. The sites in this project are funded partially or fully by APNIC, but operated as "anycast" mirror copies of existing Root servers, by the applicable Root server operator
  • APNIC begins IPv6 training
  • LACNIC becomes the 4th official RIR

2001

2000

  • October: Also playing an active role in APNIC meetings, Mr. Maemura Akinori was first elected a member of the APNIC Executive Council in October 2000
  • 24 - 27 October: APNIC 10 held in Brisbane, Australia
  • 3 March: APNIC 9 held in Seoul, Korea, in conjunction with APRICOT 2000
  • APNIC has first standalone Open Policy Meeting
  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs) introduced to provide an open public forum to discuss topics of interest to APNIC and the Internet Community in the Asia Pacific region
  • Membership grew by a record 52 per cent
  • Minimum category of membership now determined by address holdings
  • Document strategy implemented
  • Commencement of translation project
  • Hosting of ASO secretariat services

1999

  • July: After four years of testing, IANA delegated the initial IPv6 address space to the worldwide regional registries in order to begin immediate worldwide deployment of IPv6 addresses
  • March: APNIC developed a document describing APNIC's policies for address space management.  This document was presented to the APNIC Members' Meeting in March 1999 for further consideration
  • 6 March: APNIC 8: held at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SICEC) Suntec City, Singapore
  • February: The EC resolved to increase the number of its members from five to seven, with the intention of increasing the EC's ability to draw from a wider geographic range of the APNIC membership
  • ASO/ASO AC created under MoU between ICANN and three RIRs
  • APNIC community adopts its first IPv6 allocation and assignment policy
  • APNIC logo makes it debut
  • APNIC makes its first IPv6 allocation to WIDE Project
  • Training launched during the APRICOT99 conference
  • APNIC recruits a training manager
  • APNIC begins work on Resource Certification
  • APNIC plays a crucial role in the formation of the Address Supporting Organization as part of ICANN

1998

  • 22 February: APNIC 7 held at Shangri La Manila Hotel, Manila, Philippines, in conjunction with APRICOT 98
  • APNIC whois enquiries break 1,000,000 enquiries per month
  • APNIC relocates from Tokyo to Brisbane, Australia (April - August 2008), continuous operation throughout
  • Tax advantages for membership organizations
  • ICANN established

1997

  • 22 December: Control of IP network allocation was passed to ARIN (American Register of Internet Networks) along with similar organizations for European (RIPE) and Asian-Pacific (APNIC) networks
  • 6 June: APNIC 6 held in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia
  • 21 January: APNIC 5 held in Hong Kong.  Confederation membership category introduced
  • Identified need to move from Japan due to complexity of operations and to reduce cost
  • Independent consultants (KPMG) contracted to identify location

1996

  • June: APNIC 4 held as part of the INET '96 meeting in Montreal, Canada
  • 30 April: APNIC registered in Seychelles as non-profit international organization
  • January: APNIC 3 held in conjunction with APNG in Singapore.  First APNIC Executive Council (EC) formed from five economies financially supporting APNIC
  • APNIC membership reaches 200 made up of four membership tiers (APNIC-040): Large, Medium, Small and Enterprise
  • First APRICOT meeting held

1995

  • 2 July: APNIC 2 held in conjunction with APNG in Hawaii
  • March: Professor Li Xing from Tsinghau University was elected the Executive Committee member of the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) for the first time
  • 16 & 17 January: APNIC 1 the first APNIC meeting held at Cheraronkon University, Bangkok, Thailand (two-day meeting, volunteer run, no fees)

  • APNIC membership structure introduced comprising three "member" types defined by APNIC-001: ISP (Local IR), Enterprise, National
  • Three operating RIRs RIPE, APNIC, and InterNIC (ARIN) collaborated on RFC 2050, the first comprehensive description of global address management policy and procedures
  • APNIC helps found APRICOT

1994

  • IANA authorized APNIC to commence allocating resources in the Asia Pacific region
  • November: APNIC assistance models discussed at APNG meeting in Beijing, China
  • 20 & 21 June: APNIC report at CCIRN meeting records that APNIC has 27 members from 12 economies
  • 17 & 18 June: APNIC pilot project reported as successfully completed at the APCCIRN/APEPG meeting in Prague, Czech Republic

1993

  • Proposal for Distributed APNIC operations
  • 13 December: David Conrad (APNIC's first Director General) presents an APNIC midterm status report at the APCCIRN/APEPG meeting in Taipei, Taiwan
  • 1 September: List of APNIC participants outlined in areas of work for APCCIRN
  • 23 & 24 August: Status report on APNIC experiment at the APCCIRN meeting in California, USA
  • 20 & 21 August: Status report by Jun Murai given on the goals of the APNIC pilot project presented to the APCCIRN meeting in San Francisco. APNIC project period to be September 1993 to June 1994
  • 13 January: A proposal for an APNIC experiment was presented by Jun Murai & Masaki Hirabaru (Wide Project / JNIC) at the APPCCIRN meeting in Waikiki, Honolulu
  • The Asia Pacific Network Information Centre ("APNIC") was established as a project of the Asia Pacific Networking Group (APNG) in Tokyo in 1993

1992

  • RFC 1366 published, setting out the basis for an evolution of the registry process
  • June: Discussions about the possibility of a NIC for the Asia Pacific region were initiated at APCCIRN3 in Tokyo, Japan
