Some APNIC services were unavailable during a short period on Tuesday, 9 April 2013

There was an intermittent router failure on Tuesday, 9  April 2013, which was resolved.

The following services were partially affected:

www.apnic.net, ftp.apnic.net, myapnic.net, livehelp.apnic.net

Description:

One of our border routers locked up while still announcing BGP routes. This  caused an issue connecting to the services behind the router.

Sequence of events:

  1. 14:38 (UTC+10) – Router locked up and monitoring system alerted operations team.
  2. 14:40 (UTC+10) – Initial investigation, problems connecting to router.
  3. 14:55 (UTC+10) – Sent staff to remote data centre.
  4. 15:35 (UTC+10) – Router was rebooted.
  5. 15:42 (UTC+10) ­- All services restored

Impact:

 A portion of network traffic that prefers the backup link was affected. The result was a partial service failure.

Mitigation and Improvement:

  • Improving out-of-band access.
  • Investigating the cause of failure.
  • Improving internal recovery process.
