IPv4 distribution

IPv4 cumulative distribution (number of /8 delegated)

IPv4 distribution reflects sustained growth over a five-year period from 2003-2008. At the end of 2008, APNIC managed almost 30 /8 blocks of IPv4 addresses (approximately 500 million addresses). Overall, demand continued to accelerate with 3.09 /8s allocated in 2006, 4.18 /8s in 2007 and a total of 5.26 /8s in 2008. Most of this growth was driven by rapid Internet deployment in highly populous economies such as China and India. Six out of the ten of the most populated economies in the world are in the Asia Pacific region.

Units of IPv4

For the purposes of these statistics, IPv4 delegations are measured in terms of a /8 (or slash 8). The IPv4 address space is a 32-bit field. There are 4,294,467,296 unique values, considered in this context as a sequence of 256 /8s, where each /8 corresponds to 16,777,216 unique address values.
