Live features at APNIC meetings
Follow the events at APNIC open policy meetings in real time whether onsite at the meeting, or watching remotely from anywhere in the world. The live features available online give you the chance to participate in APNIC meetings in near real time. More details will be provided closer to the meeting. The next meeting, APNIC 27, will be held in Manila, Philippines, from 18-27 February 2009.
Video streaming |
At APNIC meetings, many sessions are video streamed live via unicast and multicast, in MPEG4 format.
Viewing video streams of APNIC meetings
APNIC has tested QuickTime on Windows and Macintosh and Mplayer (with live.com support) on Linux/Unix platforms.
Quicktime
To watch the video stream in a browser window, simply click on the video links provided on the APNIC meeting home page when the meeting is underway.
To watch the video stream session in your QuickTime player directly, go to the File menu of QuickTime, select "Open URL in new player", and use the following URL:
rtsp://streaming.apnic.net/webcast2.sdp
MPlayer (with live.com support)
To watch the video streams indicated as unicast, from the command line, enter:
mplayer -rtsp-stream-over-tcp rtsp://streaming.apnic.net/webcast2.sdp
To watch the video streams indicated as multicast, first download the .sdp file linked from the on the APNIC meeting home page when the meeting is underway, then from the command line, enter:
mplayer sdp://multicast.sdp

Audio streaming |
At APNIC meetings, many sessions are audio streamed live in MP3 format.
The URLs used will be:
- http://webcast.apnic.net/room1.sdp, or
- http://webcast.apnic.net/room2.sdp
Listening to audio streams of APNIC meetings
Windows Media Player within a web browser
To listen to the audio stream in a browser window, simply click on the audio links provided on the APNIC meeting home page when the meeting is underway.
Other media players
To listen to the audio stream in your favourite media player, click on the audio link given on the meeting home page. This will launch your media player and begin the audio stream.
Linux
To listen to the audio streams indicated as unicast, from the command line, enter:
mplayer -rtsp-stream-over-tcp -vo none rtsp://streaming.apnic.net/webcast1.sdp
Listening to audio archives
After each session, the audio will be added to APNIC's new podcasting service.
To subscribe the APNIC podcasts, paste the following feed URL into your RSS aggregator or podcatcher software:

Live transcripts |
- Live transcripts of selected sessions are available during APNIC meetings from this webpage and via Jabber chat.
- Text files of the transcripts are available on the website within a day of being transcribed.

Jabber chat |
APNIC meetings feature Jabber chat rooms to allow people anywhere in the world to follow and participate in live discussions. With Jabber, you can:
- Follow live transcripts of most meeting sessions
- Discuss issues with others in the chat room
- Have your questions or comments read out and discussed at the meeting
- Have your position (for or against) on policy proposals considered during the consensus process
Using Jabber at APNIC meetings
You can use Jabber either in a web browser or by downloading a stand alone Jabber client.
Using Jabber in a web browser
To use Jabber chat in a browser window, simply click on the links provided on the APNIC meeting home page when the meeting is underway.
Using Jabber as a stand alone client
Please follow the steps below:
- Download a Jabber client
APNIC has tested the Jabber client PSI on most major platforms.
You can also use other Jabber clients that support groupchat. Your systems administrator may be able to help you choose and configure an alternative client.
- Create an account on a Jabber server
Refer to your Jabber client help guide or the Jabber.org User Guide for instructions. Ensure that the jabber server you use to create your account supports groupchat.
- Connect to a groupchat
In your Jabber client, choose the "Join Groupchat" option.

Then enter the following information into the box that appears:
Host: conference.jabber.apnic.net
Room: Enter the name of the chat room that you wish to join
Nickname: Enter any nickname that you wish to use for this chat

This chatroom is used to stream live transcripts of selected meeting sessions. There is no chat in this room. |
room1 |
This chatroom is used for discussions related to the meeting session that is video streamed live.
You can follow the session live via the video stream or the live transcripts while giving your input via the room1 chatroom. |
room2 |
Some APNIC sessions at APNIC meetings are run in parallel. When this is the case, one room is not video streamed or available via live transcripts.
However, you can have input in such sessions by using room2. To do this, download the presentations for the session and follow the messages in the room2 chatroom that tell you which slide is currently being presented. Any questions or statements you add to room2 will be read out in the session. |
