The Ankur Bangla Live CD version 1.0 (PaantoBhuter Jyaanto Chhaanaa)
is the culmination of more than one year of tireless effort by the
Ankur
Bangla Project volunteers. Due to their hard work, we have a release
to be truly proud of. Thanks very much to each and every Ankur Bangla
project volunteer out there - you all rock!!
But hey hey hey!! This is just the beginning.
The Live CD is designed to be just a *preview* of what Ankur has in
store for Bangla speaking people from all over the world. We promise
much much more very very soon. Already our hackers have started work
on KDE - and you'll be seeing Bangla localized version of Evolution
within a few weeks.
Now about this release...
This release is basically a highly tweaked version the previous
version (beta3). Updated packages include xine-lib (now at 1.0-rc1)
and Gaim 0.72 (with support for the newer avatars of MSN and Yahoo!
protocols). The documentation has been updated, and with this
release, as soon as
you pop your CD into your Windows box, it autoruns with a nice HTML
page coming up with info about the CD and directions on how to boot
from it.
Moreover, I have included TightVNC in this release of the Live CD.
That means that you can do some really cool stuff with it. (Bangla
Desktop in a browser - anyone?)
Many of you may know that Ankur is not only restricted to GNU/Linux.
Quite a few of its projects have ports for Windows. This CD contains
some of the Windows software from Ankur. For example, Lekho is a
"plain text" editor designed to take in phonetic input from a
standard US keyboard and convert (transliterate) it online into
bangla text. Also included is the Probhat for Windows package, which
lets you use the Probhat Bangla layout (from Ankur) in Windows
XP/2000. Moreover, we have also included a wonderful piece of
software which is not from Ankur, but is heavily used by the Ankur
developers.
It is called Yudit, and if you are not using it - install it today!!
Yudit works in both Windows and GNU/Linux.
The ISO image and its MD5sum can be downloaded (approx 408 MB
download) from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=43331&package_id
=96 784&release_id=205011
Bugs should be reported at http://www.bengalinux.org/bugs
Mailing list for people interested in the LiveCD is at

Screenshots are available at

A round of special thanks goes out to Indranil Dasgupta and Malay
Mitra for helping in the production of the CD. Also, the people who
have been most helpful in the Live CD project are the beta testers -
and a HUGGGEEE thanks goes out to them.
..and thanks also to Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay - for carrying out the
hard work of distributing the Live CD to the beta testers who don't
have a high speed internet connection.
-cheers and Ho Ho Ho!!-

Known issues
------------
* GNOME Terminal does not work (use xterm instead)
* The CD by default boots into the Indian Bangla (bn_IN) locale.
Bangladeshi users may want to use the bn_BD locale by typing Ankur_BD
at
the boot prompt.
* The volume is set to mute by default in the CD. Please change that
by
clicking on the speaker icon in the panel towards the lower right
corner
of the screen.
* Do not try to drag and drop files/folders with Bangla names into
floppies and Windows partitions. The results are not predictable, and
we
are trying to solve the problem. It may be an issue with the GNOME
VFS
package.
* The dial up networking wizard has been removed due to stability
issues. It will be added in the next major release of the Live CD.
However, experienced GNU/Linux users may try out the text based
wvdial
dialer software - which is included in the CD.
* In Epiphany (browser), Bangla characters followed by hashanta are
not
rendered as expected. This is an issue with Pango. Work on a fix for
this has already been started, and this issue is expected to be
resolved
soon.
* Some users have reported that the Live CD fails to load further
after
the X Window system has started, and the initial bootup sound has
been
played. This seems to be an issue with ESD, and manually switching to
a
terminal and killing esd (killall esd) seems to work. One may also
want
to boot with the alsa=off bootoption (note that this disables all
sound).
ChangeLog
---------
* Updated Documentation
* Added TightVNC
* Upgraded to Xine-lib-1.0-rc1, GAIM 0.7.2 and Epiphany 1.0.6
* Added autorun feature for Windows users
* Added Lekho, Probhat.zip, Muktinarrow.ttf, Yudit for Windows users
* Misc. translation updates
* Added support for correct autodetection of Intel 815 chipset based
motherboards
* Timezone is now Asia/Calcutta
* Mounting subsystem now works - though support for supermount has
been
disabled
* Cleaning up and tweaking of the init.sh script (which loads up the
Mainmodule)
* Added the Morphix Derivative-Distribution License into the Live CD.
