October 1 set for testing Y2K compliance

ISLAMABAD (July 24) : The National Task Force on Y2K on Friday decided to 
fix October 1 as the date for testing all systems and services of various 
sectors and organisations which have already reported Y2K compliance.  This 
decision was taken at a meeting of the Task Force held here with Planning 
Commission Deputy Chairman Ahsan Iqbal in the chair. The meeting reviewed 
the position regarding status of Y2K related work in various sectors and 
organisations and decided to extend the date for internal compliance for 
mission critical systems in individual organisations, to September, 30, 
this year. It was also decided to request the Prime Minister to accept the 
ownership of Y2K programme in Pakistan. Earlier, National Y2K Coordinator 
and Director General, Pakistan Computer Bureau Dr Ijaz H. Khwaja, briefed 
the meeting regarding the measures already taken vis-a-vis Y2K readiness 
during last few months. This included identification and preparation of 
list of critical state organisations in important sectors and periodic 
survey to assess the Y2K status and preparedness in these organisations. 
The Computer Bureau has also set up a Y2K control room to coordinate and 
monitor Y2K activities. It has also constituted study teams of 
professionals to visit major state organisations. Local consultants have 
also been deployed to study and report in the energy, communication and 
transport sectors. Services of Y2K expert through Commonwealth Secretariat 
has also been acquired for the guidance on Y2K. The meeting was attended by 
representatives of ministries and offices of water and power, 
communications, defence, railways, aviation, health and software export 
board, computer society of Pakistan etc. It was also decided to carry on 
the Y2K issue publicity campaign on TV and Internet as well as educational 
advertisements in the national press.--APP
