Key Pakistani companies almost Y2K compliant

Key Pakistani companies almost Y2K compliant

ISLAMABAD (July 20) : Key Pakistani companies and public utilities
said on Monday they were almost Y2K compliant and would be prepared
for the computer bug by the year's end.
Pakistan Telecommunications Co. Ltd. and Water and Power Development
Authority reported about 80 percent compliance for the millennium bug
problem.

"About 80 percent of all systems are now compliant," said a PTCL
spokesman, at a seminar organised by a government task force set up
to ensure computer systems in the public sector do not face problems
when the year ends.

The Y2K computer bug, which may cause some computers to fail because
of a problem correctly reading dates at the turn of the century, has
caused widespread global concern.

Officials say Pakistan, which has 138 mainframes and 1,649 mini-
computers in the government and private sector, was late in starting
an awareness campaign to warn of the dangers of the bug.
But information technology experts at the seminar said major work
appears to have been completed and except for minor glitches,
airports, banks, railways, power stations and telephones should work
in the New Year.

A Wapda spokesman said 85 percent of all generation and transmission
systems had been made compliant and the remaining work would be
completed by September, the government deadline for 100 percent
compliance.

Zohair Siddiq, general manager of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA),
said most of the work had been completed on vital communication
systems, including radar and navigation systems, at the 42 airports
in the country.

He said the remainder of the work would be completed by late October
or early November.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission said all
operational nuclear power and research reactors had been made
compliant and work was continuing on the under-construction 300-
megawatt Chashma nuclear power plant.

The Chashma power plant, being built with Chinese help, is due to
start producing electricity before the end of the year.--Reuters
