India to head UN committee on Y2K compliance
New Delhi
11 JULY
INDIA has been selected to head a four-member group on embedded
systems under the United Nations that would come out with a report by
the end of this month, suggesting appropriate methods to tackle Y2K
problems in embedded systems in Asian nations.
Embedded systems, which provide a cost-effective way of controlling
support systems, use microprocessor chips that carry programmed
instructions to control or monitor equipment.
The group was set up by the UN working group on informatics at the UN
National Y2K Coordinators' Conference at New York last month, S
Ramakrishnan, head of Y2K cell of the department of electronics (DoE)
who represented India at the conference, said. The group, which
includes Japan, Korea and Philippines, was the result of
deleberations at the Asian regional forum meeting, he said, adding
the report would also help countries from other continents. - PTI
