Software export target of $35 million fixed for 1999-2000

KHALID ABBAS SAIF

FAISALABAD (July 3) : Federal government has placed software export
target of 35 million dollars for the current fiscal 1999-2000 and 800
engineers and technicians in the field of Information Technology
would be produce under a comprehensive programme, which will be
announced within a month.

According to an official source, a draft of the "National Information
Technology Policy" has been finalised by the steering committee on
Information Technology and it will be launched during the current
fiscal.

It provides a mechanism for the Information Technology propagation on
a massive scale both in the public and private sectors. Under a
proposed plan, work will be carried out on a number of development
projects. The project namely the establishment of 200 smart school by
the Ministry of Education and the improvement and computerisation of
the judicial system sponsored by the minister of law and justice are
the major initiatives.

The other initiatives include the implementation of the concept of
electronic government and paperless office in the Planning Commission
in the first stage. The concept will be replicated in other
ministries.

The National Database Organisation (NDO) working under the Ministry
of Interior, will be launching the project of computerisation of
identity cards on self-financing basis. NDO will also launch a
National Information Technology Project for monitoring and
implementation of the Information Technology in its true perspective.

According to official source, the projects on the policy service
reforms and district management service reforms will also be
initiated during 1999-2000. Presently, the importance of Information
Technology becomes even more pronounced in view of the domestic issue
faced by our country which include corruption, lack of transparency,
inefficiency and mismanagement.

In Pakistan, very little has yet been done in the area of Information
Technology. The government realising its need for the first time has
laid highest priority to this area.
