[Pakistan] on-line youth conference on National Youth Policy

[from Comp-list]

Dear Sir:

Second week of next month, 4th-10th May 2003, is being celebrated as
the International Youth Week worldwide. As a contribution, we are
organizing an on-line youth conference on National Youth Policy on
Saturday 10th May 2003.

For a country like Pakistan, in which one forth population i.e. about
35 million is youth (age 15-29), nothing could be as important as a
broadly acceptable vision for youth and an effective mechanism for
harnessing the potential of youth. In this context, National Youth
Policy (NYP) can only be the first, albeit extremely important step.
It is like the first brick of any wall, which if laid down wrongly,
could never be rectified, unless the whole structure has to be
demolished.

This online conference would be a brainstorming session to discuss
the 1) need, 2) framework and; 3) process of formulation of National
Youth Policy. Young parliamentarians, youth activists, youth
ministries, students, young professionals, entrepreneurs, artists,
and intellectuals, would sign-in the conference. This conference
would suggest a Youth Vision and would review the framework for Youth
Policy as approved by the Federal Cabinet recently.

To make this exercise effective, related documents and chat protocol
would be uploaded at www.jawanpakistan.org/conference.htm by 1st May
2003. To log-in the chat room, please visit www.jawanpakistan.org on
10th May 2003 from 4 pm to 8 pm. We hope to get you assistance in
making this initiative a success. For our brief introduction and
selecting method(s) of your assistance, please see overleaf or below.

We look forward to your click!

JAWAN PAKISTAN

Jawan Pakistan (JP) is a registered youth organization at federal and
provincial levels since 1992. It is managed voluntarily by a group of
young entrepreneurs and professionals. It has taken lead in providing
intellectual guidance and leadership development to the youth by
different methods over last decade. Its activities included seminars,
volunteer work, publications and advocacy. Convinced by the ITC
revolution in Pakistan over last three years, it has been
concentrating solely on on-line youth work. Its flagship project is
known as www.jawanpakistan.org launched in December 2002. The website
since then has been visited by about 200,000 people, maintaining an
average of 2,000 hits per day. The website was rated as No. 1 URL by
Spider Magazine and was reviewed as a leading website by Daily
Nation.

Jawan Pakistan’s second current project is a ‘Think Tank on Youth’.
This Think Tank provides informed perspective on youth related
matters to a broad audience, including youth themselves, policy
makers, youth activists, educationists etc. Its primary work has been
on National Youth Policy (www.jawanpakistan.org/thinktank.htm). It
has been declared as National Focal Point on Youth for Pakistan by
International Foundation for Human Development/UNESCO. Lately, JP has
been invited, and since then engaged, in formulation of National
Youth Policy with multilateral donors and the Government of Pakistan.

Disclaimer: Jawan Pakistan is a not-for-profit, non-partisan
organization, and runs on self-reliant basis and local resources.
Opinions expressed in its newsletter are those of contributors and it
does not necessarily agree or disagree with them.
