Re: [GLOBAL-V6] PI space under IPv6

Hi,

[...]

We rather should focus on more important issues, like bringing up more alternative solutions (someone finally get shim6 to work? :-) ) to provide to potentional "PI"-canidates, which might prevent them from "needing" their Prefix in the global table. Or how to prevent ASs all over the world deaggregate their netblocks for reasons like traffic engineering and other selfmade excuses.

I'm happy to talk any customer out of this "i need an ASN and PI space" attitude if there are alternatives or if their only argument is "i don't want to renumber again!", or there is a chance that they just become LIR or similiar. But who are we to tell anyone "you are not worthy to get your prefix in the DFZ! Live with it!"?

I fully agree. The net is becoming more and more important to organisations, and for some organisations being independent of an ISP and having control over the routing of their address space is a requirement. But we also have to make sure that the routing keeps working, otherwise everybody loses.

Because of the size of the global routing table, we have to be careful with handing out address space for now. In the long term, I don't think we can keep refusing to give address space to organisations. That means that a better (routing? id/locator split? shim6?) system has to be developed. But I think discussing that is better done on the RAM (https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ram) mailing list...
