An exchange for broadband capacity?
There are exchanges where you can buy and sell stocks, futures, pork bellies, wine and even pollution allowances. Why not an exchange for the trading of digital bits and bytes? "That is my dream," said Hamadoun Touré, secretary general of the International Telecommunications Union, a United Nations agency based in Geneva that sets international communications standards.

Inventor of the Internet takes aim at BitTorrent
In the 1960s, Lawrence Roberts invented computer networking via data packets, which led directly to the development of ARPANet and the Internet . And now Roberts is trying to fix one of the Internet's biggest problems: network overload caused by peer-to-peer file transfers.

Internet overhaul wins approval
A complete overhaul of the way in which people navigate the internet has been given the go-ahead in Paris. The net's regulator, Icann, voted unanimously to relax the strict rules on so-called "top-level" domain names, such as .com or .uk.

Domain name shakeup may bring new net goldrush
For more than a decade the internet has been a world of dotcoms, dotnets and dotcodotuks. That could all change, however, with a new scheme to liberalise the way websites are named, creating a whole new generation of addresses such as .bank, .sport and .news.

Major internet shake-up heralds new web addresses
The internet is set for a radical shake-up after the organisation that oversees website names gave the green light to plans for a new way of creating web addresses.

I've got a .bridge I'd like to sell you
You may already know that you can buy land on the moon. That is, you can lay claim to it, and there are people who are perfectly happy to sell you a certificate which confirms that through them, you have laid claim to some small part of the Sea of Tranquillity — perhaps even that bit where Neil Armstrong declared it was a giant leap for mankind. There's even someone, I believe, who will sell you plots of "land" on the sun itself (which I think brings in a new definition of "land", since even to define what constitutes the surface of the sun is a whole branch of scientific philosophy).

The online name game - The internet will soon explode with new domain names – and we will suffer a worldwide identity crisis
Identity just got more complicated. Icann has decided to open up top-level domains to almost any suffix we can imagine – from .com, .net, .org, .co.uk, etc to .anything. So there will be an explosion in what we nerdily called the internet namespace.

Website domain names: any suffixes could be possible after landmark vote
Icann, the organisation that regulates the internet domain name system, has passed a landmark vote to relax rules limiting web addresses to "top-level" suffixes, such as .com and .uk, a move that could see people and companies register almost anything they want.

Dot whatever
Is this the end of dotcom? At a meeting this week in Paris, regulators voted to allow companies to buy their own “top-level domains”. TLDs are the last segment of an internet domain name (for example, the “com” in FT.com). At the moment, businesses must choose the suffix for their website address from a list based on what kind of organisation they are, and where they are. But no longer. Rightly, websites will soon be able to choose their own TLD.

ALAC report: Barriers to meaningful participation
A draft of the independent review of the At-Large Advisory Committee to ICANN has recently been published (a summary can be found here). The authors conclude that ALAC has made progress, but due to several factors, has not made any significant contributions. Under the current system, the prohibitive costs associated with active participation ensure that only a select group of people, representing concentrated interests, will ever be able to consistently participate and make significant contributions to the Internet governance process.

Will ICANN move to control routing security? by Brenden Kuerbis
Replying to ICANN's draft 2009 Operating Plan and Budget, the Security and Stability Advisory Committee submitted comments last week vying for its piece of the estimated $60 million ICANN revenue pie. But the interesting story is not the dollar amounts requested by SSAC, rather their request for a specific line item for "Management of certificates for the addressing system (RPKI)." This request to put ICANN in the middle of controlling routing security raises many governance issues.

ICANN Paris: a revealing exchange by Milton Mueller
This is the most intensely political ICANN meeting I have ever been in, with the possible exception of Berlin 1999. Part of the cause is the GNSO structural reform, which has the various constituencies snarling at each other about vote distributions. Multilingual domain names, which combines market pressures with geopolitics, adds to the mix. But one of the main causes is the escalating power of ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC).

Conquering the wild west of internet domains
Like 17th century tulip bulbs, internet domain names have been sought after, fought over and hugely over-valued. Companies with more budget than sense have seen a memorable address for their website as the sure route to traffic and riches, so have been willing to pay vast sums to secure precisely the name they want.

ICANN to Add New Top-Level Domains, World to Come to an End by John Levine
The biggest buzz from the Paris ICANN meeting was that the board accepted last fall's proposal for a streamlined process to add new TLDs. A variety of articles in the mainstream press, many featuring inflammatory but poorly informed quotes (from people who probably got a phone call saying "We go to press in five minutes, what do you think about ICANN's plan to add a million new domains?") didn't help. When can we expect the flood of TLDs? Don't hold your breath.

Why New TLDs Don't Change a Thing by Kevin Ohashi
I have a heard a lot lately about ICANN unanimously voting in favor or relaxing top level domain rules and had a few people come to me and ask 'how does that affect what you do?' The short answer is, it won't; at least not for a long time and here is why:

ICANN Finally Relaxes TLD Requirements -- But It Still Looks Like A Money Grab
For years, we've been among those who wondered what good it did for ICANN to dribble out new top level domains (TLDs -- such as .info, .biz, .aero, etc.) every few years. For the most part, these new domains didn't do much other than force companies to buy their name on each new TLD as it was released. It basically just seemed like a way for ICANN and registrars to keep fleecing companies. Instead, we agreed with those who wondered why we had a limited number of TLDs in the first place. Why not just open it up and let any address work?

The cyberspace domain blast
Now you can buy any domain with any suffix. If a dotcom is gone, so what? For a cost, you can create your own suffix, any letters and a
ny name. Domain names are made of three parts. The www, the "name" and the suffix like .com. With ICANN's latest decision yesterday, you now have full creative control over the last two parts. This is a revolutionary new concept creating a global scale boom in new names, massive confusion in duplication, global copycatting - all compounded with cyber-squatting, where piles of popular names will be turned into pyramids of shared stupidity.

Neue Internet-Endungen kosten 100.000 Dollar [AFP]
