Solution in Sight for Internet Governance
Regional Liaison of ICANN Africa, Anne-Rachel Inné says the solution to the debate on Internet governance can only be achieved by considering different options available to stakeholders. UNECA Champions Local Language On Net

auDA board accepts 2007 Names Policy Panel's final report
The auDA board has accepted the final report of the 2007 Names Policy Panel, which recommends a number of changes to the .au policy framework. The Panel reported that, overall, it believes the current .au policy rules strike an appropriate balance between allowing people to register the domain names they want whilst protecting the integrity and usability of the .au domain. However, the Panel identified some ways in which the policy rules might be clarified or enhanced to ensure they are workable and effective.

Serbian .RS Domains to Be Launched January [news release]
Serbian Registry of Domain Names (RNIDS) adopted on October 26, 2007 new regulations on .rs ccTLD. .rs stands for the Republic of Serbia. It was previously .yu ccTLD, which stood for Yugoslavia. According to the new regulations, both foreign and domestic individuals and legal entities are now eligible to register an unlimited number of .rs domains in Serbia.

Nominet registrant satisfaction survey results [news release]
We conducted our fifth registrant satisfaction survey in September 2007 and the results of this are now available. We are pleased to report that the responses that our customers gave resulted in an overall customer satisfaction index rating of 83.5%.  This is a slight decrease of 0.7% when compared against our last survey that was conducted in February 2007.  Whilst this is slightly disappointing, it is worthwhile to consider we still remain in the top quartile on the Satisfaction Index League Table.

Defendants Respond to Dell’s Anti-Tasting Suit By John Levine
The defendants in Dell’s domain tasting suit responded last Friday. It looks like a pretty feeble response to me. Their main argument is that they’re just the registrar, and deny Dell’s claim that the registrants are fakes made up by the registrar. They also argue that they’re not infringing, they didn’t use the names in question in commerce, they were just acting as helpful search engines, you know, like Google or Yahoo. (The comparison to Google and Yahoo is theirs.)

Dell v. Belgium Domains et al: Potential Damages of $110,000,000.00
Dell, Inc and Alienware Corporation filed the federal complaint against Belgium Domains, LLC, CapitolDomains, LLC, DomainDoorman,LLC, Netrian Ventures, LTD,  IHoldings.com, Inc., Juan Pablo Vazquez adn Joe Doe Defendants on October 7, 2007.  The complaint was filed under seal until Dell could get its request for injunctive relief heard by the court, asking for an order that the domains get locked down and evidence be preserved, among other emergency ex parte relief.

RIPE NCC Makes Record Number of IPv6 Allocations [news release]
The months of October and November 2007 set new records for the number of IPv6 allocations made in a single month by the RIPE NCC. 24 allocations were made to RIPE NCC members in October, a record immediately broken by the 31 allocations made in November. The previous peak was 19 allocations in a single month, which was achieved on three separate occasions in 2003, 2004 and 2007.

Job.at sells for €408,000
Job.at sold for €408,000 this week, the highest value of any .at domain name sold to date, and second highest value of any domain name sold in a German-speaking country. The highest known sale prior to this was Mozart.at for €70,000 in the .AT ccTLD and US$695,000 for poker.com, bought by a German company. There have been other unreported .AT sales, but it is not believed any of these were above €200,000.

Latona also personally sold this week's #5 domain, Lowell.com to Elliot Silver's Top Notch Domains, LLC for $50,000, giving Latona a hand in three of the week's top five reported sales. The Melbourne.com sale is the 11th highest sale reported year to date.

Why Dot Mobis are Overvalued
Astonishing to read about recent domain sales in general, but what caught my eye was the recent feeding frenzy over the humble dot mobi extension (.mobi). Most eyepopping, music.mobi was recently sold for $616,000 to domain media mogul Alvaro Albarracin who also snapped up games.mobi for $405,500.

NATO soll sich gegen Cyberattacken rüsten
Bei der Verteidigung des Cyberspace soll künftig die NATO eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Das unterstrichen der Präsident des Atlantic Council, Fred Kempe, und der estnische Botschafter in Washington, Väino Reinart, bei der Vorstellung eines Berichts des Atlantic Council und des British North American Committee (BNAC) zum Thema Netzsicherheit. Das US-Verteidigungsministerium habe bei einem Treffen von NATO-Vertretern in Washington gefordert, dass die NATO die Cybersecurity zu einem zentralen Thema ihrer Arbeit machen solle, erklärte Kempe. Botschafter Reinart verwies auf die Rolle der NATO als Garant für die Sicherheit seiner Mitgliedsstaaten seit 60 Jahren. Auch wenn er bei Cyberattacken nicht gleich den "Bündnisfall" eintreten sieht, erwarte man die Erarbeitung von Strategien gegen Angriffe auf die Netze der Länder.

Finjan warnt vor neuer Trojaner-Generation
Das Sicherheitsunternehmen Finjan warnt in seinem "Web Security Trends Report" vor einer Trojaner-Generation "Trojan 2.0". Deren Botnetze würden über populäre Server und Social-Networking-Sites und nicht wie üblich mithilfe von IRC oder IRC über HTTP gesteuert. "Angriffe werden zunehmend ausgefeilter: Sie kombinieren verschiedene Dienste, um die Infektionsrate zu erhöhen", sagt Finjan-CTO Yuval Ben-Itzhak.

Domain-Geschäft wird immer lukrativer
Die Preise für Top-Domains erreichen immer höhere Rekordwerte. So wechselte in Österreich die Domain Job.at dieser Tage für 408.000 Euro den Besitzer und gilt damit in der Branche als höchstdotierter Deal im Land. Der Verkaufswert von Job.at ist knapp sechsmal so hoch wie jener der bisher teuersten österreichischen Domain Mozart.at.

Dass ein unverwechselbarer Name im Domain-Geschäft sehr wertvoll ist zeigte der diese Woche besiegelte Verkauf der österreichischen Domäne Job.at. Still ist es geworden um die Reise-Domain .travel. Offensichtlich zu still, findet die Domain-Verwaltung, und hat daher die Änderung der Vergabebedingungen beschlossen. Ausserdem gibt es Neues aus Frankreich und den Niederlanden.

Benché in fase avanzata di sviluppo (l'implementazione è quasi ultimata), IPv6 non ha riscontrato grande fermento circa la sua installazione. Ciò è dovuto al fatto che nuove tecniche per la gestione di reti private (su tutte la tecnica NAT) hanno allontanato il reale bisogno di IPv6, che ad oggi è usato soprattutto in centri di ricerca, che ne stanno testando le reali bontà.

Quali sono i miglioramenti e le novità apportate da IPv6? Uno su tutti riguarda il fattore user-friendly delle nuove tecnologie e terminali, che accedono e accederanno a Internet: dai laptop ai computer desktop, dai palmari ai telefonini. A questi si richiede una sorta di autoconfigurazione per l'accesso a Internet, cioè automatizzare le procedure di configurazione parametri quali indirizzo IP, maschera di rete, indirizzo di un server DNS e poco altro. La versione 4 del protocollo IP prevede una sorta di autoconfigurazione tramite l'uso di un server DHCP, per la versione 6 è in studio un meccanismo che sarà privo di server. Non si conoscono ancora i dettagli.

L’ICANN à la rencontre des registrars et des registres
Je suis à Prague depuis deux jours, pour assister à la troisième réunion organisée par l’ICANN pour ses registrars européens. Ces réunions furent lancées en 2005 à l’initiative de Tina Dam, alors en charge des relations avec les registres (aujourd’hui, Tina supervise le programme IDN de l’ICANN), et Tim Cole, qui s’occupe des registrars. La première a eu lieu en Belgique, à Bruxelles.

Cataluña puede tener un Estado propio en Internet gracias al PP
En el plazo máximo de seis meses, el Gobierno debe proponer que Cataluña tenga el dominio .cat en Internet, es decir, que tenga rango de Estado. Así ha quedado aprobado tras el paso de la Ley de Impulso a la Sociedad de la Información por el Senado, con los votos a favor del Partido Popular y los votos en contra de Esquerra Republicana de Cataluña, en una de las votaciones más complicadas que se recuerdan en la Cámara alta. En la Red, sólo los Estados tienen dominios formados por dos letras, como España tiene el .es y Francia el .fr, por ejemplo.
