us: Another campaign in the culture wars: Retirement
of Sandra Day O'Connor
God is coming, but it's not yet what Christians call
the Rapture. It's what promises to be a hellish battle
between liberals and conservatives ready to score a
key victory in what they call the culture wars. The
battle over who succeeds retiring U.S. Supreme Court
Justice Sandra Day O'Connor started yesterday with
both sides taking tentative steps but with
conservative Christians expecting a replacement ready
to embrace issues dear to them. ... The court has
reversed victories that Christian conservatives
thought they secured on issues such as abortion and
Internet pornography.

ca: Going to extremes in the child-porn bill (sub
req'd)
Parliament wants to toughen the laws against child
pornography. In the process, it is prepared to injure
freedom of expression and greatly expand the Criminal
Code's supply of minimum sentences. The politicians
are right to abhor child pornography and to seek to
protect the victims of that sick, abusive trade, but
they are wrong to lose their sense of proportion in
fighting it. The Senate's legal committee, which is
scheduled to consider Bill C-2 today, should raise an
alarm on two counts.
