No free lunch
Date: 2002-02-01 17:45:36
Topic: E-Business

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Not on the Internet, not
anywhere. This month, we see the popular online newspaper,
MalaysiaKini.Com move itself into requiring paid subscriptions for some
value added portions of its content. Something which is a long time
coming, in my opinion, especially so in MalaysiaKini's case. Just how long
were you expecting this intrepid bunch of pioneers to live on pithy
advertising revenue ?

Linus in GNU/Wonderland
Date: 2002-02-01 17:17:26
Topic: GNU / GPL

"... before he could urge the camel to pick up the pace a man stepped out
of the woods onto the path. He was an odd looking man, with hair that
pointed anywhere except where hair usually points..."

The February issue of Linux Gazette is now out there, with a bedtime story
by Clyde Williamson, reprinted (with permission, of course) from System
Toolbox. have some fun reading the story, The Adventures of Little Linus
In GNU/Wonderland.

Another submission by the resident literary wonk, RW. This one is an ode
to the times we live in and what we've become. What's still lacking is
submissions from other literary wonks out there. Send them in, will you ?

HITB Issue #25
Date: 2002-01-14 18:48:20
Topic: Education

Yes, we're still alive and well, and most of our monetary problems have
been quelled even if it is merely for a moment and we've got a pretty
packed issue this month. It seemed we would only be able to come up with
perhaps 6 articles as always, but wonder of wonders, we actually managed
to get 10. I'd like to welcome back logik, one of our writers, who went
MIA quite some time back. Eitherways, he's here and should be writing for
us on a more regular basis. Speaking of MIA, has anyone seen presto
around?

Antidote
Date: 2002-01-08 15:26:32
Topic: Education

What's the best antidote for a crazy, busy life?
A good friend, to talk to, laugh with and  cry;
Like the starlets in the heavens, your love glows and shines,
In you I found a friend ; so special, and kind.

The Real McCoy
Date: 2002-01-04 14:00:06
Topic: The Internet

On the internet, no one knows if you're a dog. No one also knows if you
are who you say you are. This has brought about a set of new problems and
has given fuel for critics to say that the internet is not really
trustable. Forgeries and fraudulent postings abound, and what happened on
January 2, 2002 is another such example.

Someting rotten in IT
Date: 2001-12-24 12:30:20
Topic: Government

Corruption of a different nature - many know this happens... yet many are
not at a fair position to do much about it. Some of us have been victims
and some of us perpetrators. And yet some have been unfortunate silent
followers.

Many can write much about all this... but many a times it's a fine line
between legal and illegal... fair and unfair... just and unjust... man and
animal. Worth a read.

Perception of Linux among undergrads
Date: 2001-12-19 16:15:15
Topic: Linux

LinuxJournal has an article written by a lecturer who strawpolled his
final year undergraduate class on Linux and MS Windows. What he found
shocked him with its level of myths, clangers and recurring themes about
why Linux is unsuitable for them. In his article, he presents these
findings as well as a commentary on the whole perception. While some of
what he says is true, and applies to opensource operating systems
generally, he is also a little Linux-biased in that he doesnt properly
address the true concerns of the average end-user in migrating to
opensource software and operating systems.
