Childrens Access to Computers in the home: Advantages and Disadvantages and the Implications for Schools
Hi all
Some research below that there are no doubt some people interested
in. For those who are interested, I also have a copy of a report by
Gill Valentine and Sarah Holloway (from the Department of Geography
of University of Sheffield and Loughborough respectively) titled ‘
Online Dangers?: Geographies of Parents Fears for Children’s Safety
in Cyberspace' in hard copy and which seems to be dated this year
although I’m not sure. I also have another paper in hard copy titled
'The Digital Generation?: Children, ICT and The Everyday Nature of
Social Exclusion' by Valentine, Holloway and Nick Bingham (Department
of Geography, Open University). If anybody is particularly interested
in these articles, let me know and I’ll see about photocopying it and
posting, although please only if you are very interested in it.
Cheers
David
Children’s Access to Computers in the home: Advantages and
Disadvantages and the Implications for Schools.
Maureen Barlin CAES ICT February 2000
ABSTRACT
Home computers are no longer a novelty. According to research by
Gartner e-business computers whirr away quietly in one in three homes
in the United Kingdom. Many parents recognise the potential power of
the computer as a learning tool and are concerned that their children
could be disadvantaged if they do not have access to a computer at
home. Other parents feel that their children will be advantaged but
are not really sure what the advantages are. Teachers recognise that
more and more children have access to a home computer and that the
growth in home ownership has implications for schools. Teachers are
faced with the task of catering for children with access to the
technology without disadvantaging those without. A survey was carried
out in an Infant School in the Greater London area to find out the
range of computer access available to the children, what parents
perceived the benefits of a home computer to be and to look at the
implications for the school.
