OPINION: LAWRENCE LESSIG
Just Compensation
Congress should help artists get paid without delivering the Internet
into the hands of the big labels.
Just as the record labels smell victory in their judicial battle to
control how content gets distributed on the Net, an interesting
scuffle is beginning to erupt within the halls of Congress. It may
well be that the laws as written give the labels the right to veto
innovation in the distribution of content, but some in Congress, from
both sides of the aisle, are beginning to wonder whether
these laws make sense. We didn't deliver control over FedEx (FDX)
into the hands of the Post Office; should we deliver
control over Internet distribution into the hands of the labels?

Korean Government Promises Action Against Porn Sites
The Korean Government is angry at overseas-based pornographic Web
sites targeting Korean Internet users - although it is
reportedly only acting against Web sites providing Korean content.

Hate Groups Will Hate These Ads
White extremists congregating in Yahoo clubs and chat rooms will now
be greeted with banner ads urging them to "fight hate
and promote tolerance."
The Internet portal and Tolerance.org, a new website created by the
Southern Poverty Law Center, launched the campaign
Wednesday.

Do cybercrime laws equal censorship?
Uncle Sam subjects new drugs to thorough scrutiny before approving
them. Were he equally careful with new laws, people
wouldn't wonder whether his top hat and beard conceal Big Brother
underneath.

43 in Congress Ask Court to Revisit Clinic Threat Issue
Abortion: They say a Web site and posters calling doctors 'butchers'
aren't protected free speech.
In a highly unusual move, 43 members of Congress said Thursday
they will ask the federal appeals court in San Francisco to
revisit a recent ruling holding that an Internet site and "wanted"
posters identifying abortion providers as "baby butchers"
deserving punishment are free speech.
