APNIC's policy on viruses and email attachments

All mail sent or received by APNIC is scanned for viruses. APNIC reserves the right to modify emails or their attachments if a threat is suspected or discovered.

Process for handling suspect attachments

If APNIC discovers a virus in an email or an email attachment, APNIC quarantines the entire email and informs the sender that a virus was discovered. Please note that infected email, inlcuding all attachments, will not be delivered to the intended recipient.

APNIC does not immediately delete an infected email. On request, APNIC will delete or return the email and attachments to the sender. To ask APNIC to do this, please email technical@apnic.net.

APNIC does not remove viruses from attachments.

In some situations APNIC will rename some files in transit so that they cannot be run without due consideration by the recipient. This currently applies to files with the following extensions:

  • .exe
  • .com
  • .bat
  • .vbs
  • .scr
  • .shs
  • .dll
  • .vxd
  • .pif
  • .reg
  • .ocx
  • .lnk
  • .js
  • .eml

APNIC reserves the right to amend this list without notice.

For more information, please contact technical@apnic.net.
