Champika is currently the Training Unit Manager and responsible for managing the APNIC training activities in the Asia Pacific region. He was previously the Team Leader of the APNIC training team, a Senior Training Specialist and also the APNIC Liaison Officer for the South Asia region.

Current Position and Activities

As the APNIC Training Unit Manager, Champika is responsible for assessing training and development needs in the Asia Pacific region in collaboration with APNIC stakeholders and managing the APNIC training unit.  He is responsible for managing a team of trainers who are involved in the design, development, and delivery of regular APNIC training and technical workshops.

Champika joined APNIC in December 1999. He has over 15 years of experience and worked in a number of countries in the IT industry, academia, research, and training environments.

Previous Positions

As the Training Team Leader Champika has been involved in guiding and coaching training team members and supervise the training team projects.

Also as a Senior Training Specialist, he has been involved in the design, development, and delivery of technical training courses and workshops to the Internet community of the Asia Pacific Region. (Core areas: Internet Resource Management, IPv6, DNS / DNSSEC, Routing, Network Security, ISP Services).

In the past, Champika has also been involved in evaluating Internet resource requests and allocating Internet resources (IPv4/IPv6 addresses and Autonomous System numbers) to the APNIC members in the region.

Prior to APNIC, Champika worked as a Research Associate at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. He started his career with IBM as a Systems Engineer and later worked as an IBM Software Systems Specialist. He was also selected as an IBM Instructor, where he conducted various IBM training courses to their clientele.

Education/Achievements

Champika holds a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering and a Masters degree in Computer Engineering. He was awarded Undergraduate Merit scholarships from the Government of Sri Lanka as well as the Government of India and Postgraduate Merit Scholarship from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand. Champika’s postgraduate thesis was published in an academic journal.

At IBM, Champika won a number of professional awards and recognitions, such as the ‘IBM ASEAN Win-Team-Execute Award’ and the ‘IBM ASEAN Best Trainee Award’.

Current positions outside of APNIC

Champika is a member of the Australian Computer Society.

Interests

Champika is fluent in Sinhalese and English.

Besides his professional work, Champika also enjoys his artistic creations and loves painting, sketching, and cartooning. His creative work has been published in local and international magazines, and he has also won a number of awards in this field.

He is also passionate about animal welfare and is ‘pleased as Punch’ about his role as a foster parent to a small baby elephant (“Sapumalee”) in Uda Walawe, Sri Lanka.
