IPv4 exhaustion

Based on current research of Internet number resources, APNIC believes the pool of unallocated IPv4 address space will be consumed at some point in 2010 or 2011. After that time the cost and complexity of operating a stable and growing Internet will escalate significantly, unless IPv6 deployment is well underway.

The facts

For current projections on exhaustion of the free pool of IPv4 addresses, we suggest the following website which carries expert projections on IPv4 usage and exhaustion.

How to use 'Potaroo's' projections
Current exhaustion forecasts are based on mathematical projections of past allocation trends, which assume an ongoing acceleration of allocation rates. They assume no imposition of rationing or other new factors which would limit allocation rates, nor any increased in acceleration beyond the seen in recent years.

APNIC and IPv4

APNIC understands that this situation requires a concerted effort by this community, working for the common good, to seek, examine, and adopt responsible measures for the stewardship of remaining IPv4 address space.

The APNIC community has discussed and implemented a number of policies to manage the fair distribution of remaining address space.
