Information about ICANN

Introduction to ICANN

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) was established in 1998 to coordinate a set of technical functions previously performed under US government contract by IANA and other groups, namely:

  • Domain name system
  • IP address allocation
  • Protocol parameter assignment
  • Root server system management

Three Supporting Organizations assist ICANN in reviewing and developing recommendations on Internet policy and structure. These are:

APNIC assists in representing the Asia Pacific region within the ASO.
