Internet Governance Forum

In 2005, the WGIG report recommended the creation of a new space for dialogue for all stakeholders on an equal footing on all Internet governance-related issues. Later that year, Governments endorsed the creation of such a forum in the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, the outcome document of the 2005 Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).  In response, the United Nations Secretary-General convened the new multi-stakeholder forum, the IGF, as a space where all stakeholders participate as equals in discussions on Internet governance issues.  The IGF was originally given a five-year mandate (2006-2010). In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to extend the IGF mandate for another five years.

APNIC has actively supported IGF since its first meeting in 2006 and encourages all stakeholders to work together through the IGF and other venues where Internet governance is discussed to support the continued growth, security, and stability of the Internet.

IGF improvements

The IGF has its own continuous improvement process, where it solicits feedback from each meeting, and based on that feedback and resources available to the IGF, institutes modifications to its processes for the following year. Recently, however, an additional improvement process has been added through the creation of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development Working Group on improvements to the IGF (CSTD WG). Convened in 2010 and due to report to the United Nations General Assembly (UN GA) in 2011, the CSTD has recommended that the WG be extended for another year, with its recommendations presented to the UN GA in 2012. At the earliest, such recommended improvements could not be implemented until the 2013 IGF.  There are five technical Internet community representatives on the CSTD WG, including a representative from APNIC.
