Structure of APNIC
APNIC is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization consisting of the following:
APNIC Members
APNIC Members consist of a range of interested parties in the Asia Pacific Internet community. These members may or may not utilize Internet number resources. APNIC Membership allows members to vote in elections for Executive Council appointments.
Membership is open to all individuals and organizations. APNIC's Membership predominantly consists of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), National Internet Registries (NIRs), Network Information Centres (NICs), and other users of Internet address space throughout the Asia Pacific region.
However, as Internet resources become increasingly important, other organizations, such as domain registries, government regulators, Internet content providers, and the education community are joining APNIC in increasing numbers.
APNIC Executive Council (EC)
APNIC maintains an Executive Council that is elected by the Members to represent them in a policy- and decision-making capacity between APNIC Member Meetings.
The APNIC Executive Council (EC) serves as the governing board of APNIC, as defined in the APNIC By-laws. Each EC Member serves a two-year term of office, but is eligible for reelection at the end of each term.
Each current APNIC Member has the right to vote or assign a proxy (representative) to vote and may nominate people to stand for election.
Elections are held at each APNIC Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is conducted during the APNIC Member Meeting (AMM) in February. Voting takes place both on site at these meetings and prior to the meeting via online voting on MyAPNIC.
Each APNIC Executive Council member serves on the EC as an individual, not as a representative of any other party or member. Therefore, they must act at all times in the best interests of APNIC.
The APNIC Executive Council meets at about 12 regularly scheduled meetings per year. The minutes of these meetings are published approximately one month after each meeting, once they have been approved at the following EC meeting.
APNIC Secretariat
The APNIC Secretariat operates to serve its Members and the Asia Pacific Internet community stakeholders. Its activities are designed to help the APNIC community achieve APNIC's objectives.
The Secretariat (APNIC's staff) carries out the day-to-day work. The Secretariat is structured in four divisions: Services, Technical, Business, and Communications. These divisions encompass all APNIC activities, including that of acting as a central source of information for our members.
APNIC's activities involve a number of other organizations in the region. Non-member organizations may access APNIC's services on a fee-for-service basis. In most cases, these organizations' address space holdings predate APNIC's management of the IP address registry in the region.
APNIC's open policy development process also invites stakeholders interested in Internet number resources from around the world (but mostly the Asia Pacific) to participate. These include representatives from governments, regulators, educators, media, the technical community, civil society, and other not-for-profit organizations.
